Docent-Guided Tour of Wharton Esherick Museum
Located just outside of Valley Forge Park in Malvern, PA, the Wharton Esherick Museum is the studio of Wharton Esherick, the “dean of American craftsman” and the “father of studio furniture”. The museum shows how handcrafted design elements, large and small, unite to form a totality, which became his studio. Formally trained as a painter, he discovered his interest was really in the three-dimensional medium. He pursued this in his furniture forms and incorporated it into his workspace. Come see this beautiful and astonishing artistic workplace in a bucolic setting. Sponsored by 1975 and open to all. Meet at the Stokes Bus Bay for departure at 12:00 p.m. sharp.

The Name of Action: “To Be Or Not To Be” on Film
Join the Francis B. Gummere Professor of English, Kim Benston to explore Shakespeare’s most famous soliloquy, which remains a provocation and an enigma for readers, audiences, scholars, directors, and actors. What, if anything, does it mean—or mean to mean? We will probe the soliloquy in itself but also through several cinematic “takes.” Individually, these celluloid enactments—which we can explore as triangulated interpretations blending perspectives of directors, actors, and text—offer distinctive visions of Hamlet’s meditation, encompassing but also variously complicating issues of motivation, ambition, suffering, mortality, and the language in which we try to make sense of these momentous but deeply “puzzling” challenges to consciousness and purpose. If you know the play, fine; the only “requirement” (or, as teachers conceive it, hope) is that you read the soliloquy itself beforehand.

Alumni will be able to sign up for time slots on the day of the event. Recordings will be added to the College Archives and made accessible via the libraries’ digital repository.
Are Colleges and Universities for Truth or for Justice?
For a quarter century, the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship has been stewarding resources with the intent of educating students while simultaneously making a positive difference in communities. Recently, across the US and around the world, academics and political leaders have engaged in divisive arguments over a related question: Is higher education for truth or for justice? At the CPGC, we believe the question is unnecessarily dichotomous. An informed understanding of a liberal education in the 21st Century provides opportunities for rigorous experiential learning to complicate dominant narratives in the classroom or in the community. In this class session, participants will learn more about the CPGC approach, which is rooted in critical inquiry and consequential action, along with consideration of how it connects with the broader curriculum and critical questions vexing higher education institutions in our era.
Pre-reading or listening is not necessary, but encouraged, in order of importance: Kwame Anthony Appiah's Case for Contamination in the New York Times Magazine or a video of Interfaith America Founder and President Eboo Patel's conversation with American University President Jonathan Alger.
